Rock & Roll Baby

Tommy seems to have unusual taste in music, at least for a two-month-old.

Let me splain. First of all, he refused to nap this afternoon/evening, even though he was clearly tired. Second, usually a car ride will put him right out, especially if the napping has been less than optimal. Third, we have a couple of radio stations set in the car for inducing sleep, like the classical station and the Smooth Jazz(tm) station. Nice, soft, inoffensive music.

So, like I said, Tommy would. not. nap from about 4:15 on this afternoon. He was a bit fussy, though not overly so, but I still wanted him to get some sleep. So Kevin and I decided to go out, get Kev a new bicycle seat and find some dinner. Put the boy in the car seat (which usually causes indignant wailing if the seat is not actually moving), popped him in the car and away we go. We're driving along, and Tommy starts fussing. He is definitely over tired and he's spit his paci out. We've got the jazz station on and Robert Flack's singing "Killing Me Softly". Tommy is working on killing me loudly. Kevin's reached back and is trying to insert the paci into a tiny fussing mouth without being able to see it (and try that without sticking the paci up his nose by mistake!). I'm inwardly groaning, imagining a trip to the cycling store and an attempt at eating dinner while the little one howls.

Somehow, for some reason, Kevin switches the radio station to DC101, which is playing some Foo Fighters song. Instantly, Tommy calms down and stops fussing. He is quiet and starts sucking on the paci vigorously. I'm highly amused by the fact that the boy is made cranky by Roberta Flack but is soothed by the Foo Fighters.

But wait, there's more.

So we get to the cycling store and I'm a little surprised to see that Tommy is still awake. He's quiet now, though, so that's something. We take him into the store in his car seat and I carry him around while Kevin looks at seats. (Sorry, saddles.) The radio is on in the store. The car seat plus Tommy, who weighs 11 lbs, 12 oz now, is getting heavy so I set him on the floor and rock the car seat back and forth (see above about a stationary seat producing wails). Aerosmith comes on, "Sweet Emotion". I look down a minute or two into the song, and Tommy is fast asleep.

He slept through the rest of the time in the cycling store and through dinner. He's still asleep now in the pack & play.

My boy goes to sleep to rock music. Gotta love this kid!
